The story
The Reserve Bank's conference paper dates introduction of the Malawi kwacha to February 1971. [1]
Turning points
Decimal legal commencement
The Malawi consolidation gives 15 February 1971 for Part III’s currency conversion, separately from Parts I–II commencing on 15 September 1970. Section 15 converts covered pound, shilling and pence references at two kwacha per pound and ten tambala per shilling, with contextual exceptions. Section 16 requires domestic-currency payments in the new unit while explicitly valuing old notes and coins for continued use; foreign-currency payments are excepted. [2] [3] [4]
