The story
Switzerland’s federal franc dates from 1850. It must be distinguished from the older franc adopted by the Helvetic Republic in 1799, which continued a Bernese account unit. The shared name does not make the two units identical. [1] [5]
Zurich’s 1851 law supplies three explicit account-conversion paths: one Zurich gulden became 7/3 federal francs; eleven eastern Swiss Reichsgulden equalled ten Zurich gulden; and sixteen old Swiss francs equalled ten Zurich gulden. These rates cover particular existing contracts and exceptions. They are not a universal rate for every old coin or every canton. [2] [3] [4]
