The story
The 1852 currency law already allowed dollar reckoning. The 1860 Act then required accounts rendered to government to use dollars and cents, with four dollars equal to one pound of the existing local currency. [1] [2] [3] [4]
The requirement took effect on 1 November 1860. Accountants could retain a second column in pounds, shillings and pence, and the earlier law remained in force subject to the new provisions. This was a defined public-account conversion, not an immediate end to every use of pounds or a recall of all older coins. [3] [4] [5]
