Closer relatives. Clearer changes.
Time runs from left to right. Vertical positions bring connected currencies together. The same 401 identities and 350 primary relationships remain available.

What changed
- Related branches are reordered within groups; strongly connected groups are placed nearer one another.
- 53 currencies move between navigation groups. Euro predecessors return to their documented earlier branches; selected African and Middle Eastern branches sit beside their parents.
- Secondary connectors and the separate step-parent overlay are hidden. Full evidence remains in profiles and the relationship register.
- Adopted units and anchors appear as small diamonds and color strips along the recipient currency. Its original continuity line stays visible.
A measured improvement
Total vertical separation across the same primary links falls by 51%, from 155,268 to 76,514 drawing units. Cross-group links fall from 87 to 61. Slightly larger labels and row spacing improve the detailed view. This is a proximity heuristic, not a claim of a mathematically optimal layout.
How a currency changes its monetary basis
The original family and an adopted basis answer different questions. The continuous line preserves identity and ancestry; the small strip uses the anchor’s color. Click its diamond or strip for the dated evidence.
| Mark | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Hollow diamond | Unit adoption documented as an event. No continuing peg is inferred. |
| Colored strip with closing tick | Anchor period with a documented ending. |
| Colored strip with open circle | Evidence reaches the marked observation date; later operation is unreviewed. |
| Diamond without a strip | Start or adoption is documented, but duration is not established here. |
| Gap between strips | No anchored period is asserted. For Hong Kong, the documented floating interval remains a gap. |
Hong Kong: one currency, changing anchors
The current register records sterling anchoring in 1935–1972, a US-dollar anchor in 1972–1974, and a restored dollar link from 1983, witnessed through 2024. The original currency line is not replaced by any of these relationships. Exact days, rate changes and source limits remain in the Hong Kong profile and adopted-basis register.

What closeness does not mean
Nearby rows are a reading aid, not a claim of immediate siblinghood. Group colors organize the map; they do not override the sourced parent relationships. Pegs do not erase earlier parents or extend ancestry depth. These measurements compare the older and compact layout algorithms on the same revision39 data. The layout does not change identity, historical dates or relationship assertions; the separate Roman research update is documented in revision39.
