The story
Girsu MVN8, 179 offsets a barley obligation of 1826⅓sila with silver credited as 1450 sila of barley and delivery of 376⅓sila. Barley remains the account denomination while silver can settle part of the obligation. [1]
Cripps distinguishes Girsu institutional barley accounting from Umma merchant silver accounting. Shared exchange calculations do not make these a chronological succession or a single universal Mesopotamian currency. [2]
Barley-denominated obligations can be discharged partly in silver; exceeds a simple commodity inventory. No universal barley currency asserted. [3]
