The story

Rivero Hernández distinguishes the later Castilian maravedí unit of account from earlier physical coinage. [1]

The 1497 reform summary rates a real at 34 maravedís, a ducado at 375, and a blanca at one-half. [2]

Gonzalo de Baeza’s treasury accounts beginning in 1477 converted payment amounts into maravedís. Firm account-unit witness; does not create an ancestry edge to the concurrent real. [3]

Turning points

Account-unit observation

January 1182 fuero of SantaMaría deCortes computes monetary penalties at five sueldos per maravedí. This is an account-unit witness, not a coin-issue date. Association with the later billon-maravedí/realdevellón identity remains qualified; this is not a proved continuous obligation chain. Association with the later continuous currency identity remains qualified. [4]

Account-unit observation

Fernando III's treaty debt of 21000 maravedís was payable in specified amounts of billon; the 1218 renewal retained the obligation and payment alternatives. Association with the later continuous currency identity remains qualified. [5]
